In 2010 I found myself looking for a new job and had to think hard on what to do next. I was reading a newspaper article about a man who was going to jail for a violent act. At the end of the story, it turned out that this young man had been in the news before. In 1994, at the age of 8 he watched as his 5-year-old brother was thrown from a project building in Chicago for not stealing candy for older boys. He was traumatized. The family was paid a claim by the housing authority. He grew up and used anger to solve his problems. He is now spending his life in prison because that anger guided his life to the violent act of murder. This made me pause as I realized that no one ever advised his mother that the young boy needed counseling.
